چکیده
Abstract The paper deals with an analysis of the shear strength behaviour coarse-grained materials using large-sized direct apparatus. curve compacted material allows for determining three typical strengths, i.e. a maximum density sample tested (shear at point A), peak P), and critical achieved large horizontal movement C). Professional laboratories usually apply two different methods. first method considers A second C. aim article is not to critically evaluate both methods, but analyze results tests gravels. series showed that these stresses may differ from each other in some cases, especially poorly graded materials. In case sandy soil, C equal. However, gravel, greater than A. greatest difference between strengths was measured medium ratio increases increasing grain size tested. as well parameters gravels better represented by multi-linear or nonlinear failure line.

Effects of Particle Size on the Shear Behavior of Coarse Grained Soils Reinforced with Geogrid
In order to design civil structures that are supported by soils, the shear strength parameters of soils are required. Due to the large particle size of coarse-grained soils, large direct shear tests should be performed. In this study, large direct shear tests on three types of coarse grained soils (4.5 mm, 7.9 mm, and 15.9 mm) were performed to evaluate the effects of particle size on the shear...
متن کاملParticle Size Effect on Shear Strength of Granular Materials in Direct Shear Test
The effect of particle size on shear strength of granular materials are investigated using direct shear tests. Small direct shear test (60 mm by 60 mm by 24 mm deep) were conducted for particles passing the sieves with opening size of 2.36 mm. Meanwhile, particles passing the standard 20 mm sieves were tested using large direct shear test (300 mm by 300 mm by 200 mm deep). The large direct shea...
متن کاملInvestigation of Shear Strength Anisotropy of c- &phi Soils
Cohesive-frictional soils are widely used in the construction of embankment structures and due to the method of construction, i.e. applying compactive efforts in the vertical direction in these cases, the occurrence of anisotropy in the soil strength and permeability seems to be inevitable. In this study, attempts have been made to evaluate the shear strength of c-f soils through modifying a l...

متن کاملShear strength properties of wet granular materials.
We investigate shear strength properties of wet granular materials in the pendular state (i.e., the state where the liquid phase is discontinuous) as a function of water content. Sand and glass beads were wetted and tested in a direct shear cell and under various confining pressures. In parallel, we carried out three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations by using an explicit equation expre...
